Four primary Personality Traits...
Most of us are a subtle mix of two or more...
Having different personality traits doesn’t really mean that we all fit neatly into boxes. That would be far too simple because we humans are unique individuals and wonderfully complex beings. We do, however, all present some basic characteristics which fall into four distinctive categories. Becoming aware and knowledgeable about the four primary personality types can be a great advantage. This awareness leads to greater co-operation and far less tension in any encounter with other people, whether it be in our family, social or work environment. It also helps us understand ourselves better. Naming the four traits originates with the Greek doctor, Hippocrates, the father of modern Western medicine, who labelled them Sanguine, Phlegmatic, Choleric and Melancholy, in relation to some of their characteristics. Other names that are used to identify the different personality traits are, for example: Reds, Blues, Greens and Yellows By far, THE best way to acquire the knowledge and insights into different Personality traits, is through the skill of a master of his art, Jerry Clark.
I cannot recommend 'The Magic of Colors' highly enough!

Jerry Clark learnt this stuff, and his craft, the hard way, and presents it with real wit and skill.
I recommend it to everyone who wants to 'get the edge' and start getting loads more co-operation and far less hesitation from anyone you talk with, even your teenage kids or the boss!
North, South, East and West are also popular choices for the four 'Human characteristics' Even animal names are used sometimes, to symbolize the particular groups. Whatever tag they bear ('scuse the pun!), the different characteristics remain the same. Remember though, we humans are extremely complex creatures. So, rarely does anybody fall into one single category. We usually display qualities from two or more groups with one characteristic that is more dominant. And it’s how we demonstrate this mixture that makes us unique in our own right. Understanding this aspect governs how we act, and react, to any given situation, how others see us, and it also helps us to grow as a person. A tiny selection of different personality traits that we may exhibit are:
SANGUINE
- playful
- energetic
- talkative
- fun-orientated
PHLEGMATIC - placid
- nurturing
- good listener
- family-orientated
CHOLERIC - natural-born leader
- decisive
- domineering
- goal-orientated
MELANCHOLY - methodical
- perfectionist
- calculating
- systems orientated
Studying the different personality traits in detail, will reveal their strengths and weaknesses, how the groups interact with themselves and other groups, their tempraments and how to figure out our own, and other people’s, responses to anything that occurs in everyday life. With this fundamental knowledge, and a little practice, it becomes easy to spot the conduct and mannerisms of different people. Recognizing characteristics in those you deal with every day, will help you get a lot more support and a lot less conflict, because you now know how to communicate with them, and you can now start to get more of what you want out of a conversation! You’ll know, for instance: - who wants all the information, in detail, in writing.
- Who would like you to call with information, and would be happy if you threw in the odd joke.
- Who is a social butterfly!
- Who likes to talk about the family, and who thinks it’s none of your business.
- Who wants accurate facts, not too much routine chat, and who do you have to virtually gag, so that you can get things done.
All of the above, and a great deal more, is part of what we call personality and provides us our distinctive ‘persona’. We all have these various personality traits, whether we like it or not. We can learn a lot more about our own, and everyone else’s character type from books and CD’s and by studying people in everyday life. Interaction with other people, is unavoidable, so this extra awareness will be of tremendous advantage, and communication will become easier and less strained. With knowledge comes understanding, from which we gain power. How will you exercise this new found power? There are many books and CD’s on this subject, so many people recognize the advantages and benefits of this information already. But how many actually put what they know into practice every day? The answer, by your own observation, may astound you! (Very FEW!) You could well become the one that everybody thinks is great, because you now know the secret… you understand how to communicate with, and recognize these different personality traits!
