The Wax Bath Story
from its humble beginnings to the World Market.
If ever you wanted some informed advice on which wax bath story to invest in, ‘straight from the horse’s mouth’... THIS IS IT !
Hi, this is Mia’s husband, Paul here, with the true Wax Bath story. When colour TV first appeared, many moons ago, there were a LOT of ‘test transmissions’, most were long, boring documentaries! One of these doco’s was about the Roman Legions conquering away, and why they were pretty good at it. Not only were they well trained and highly disciplined, they had a ‘secret weapon’. They knew that it was infection and disease caused by untreated battle injuries that weakened their opponents. To gain the ‘edge’, they had M*A*S*H units (Mobile Army Surgical Hospitals) right there on the battlefields! First Aiders would ladle melted wax (probably beeswax) from a cauldron over an open fire, then run to the injured soldiers, pour this wax straight into the open wound and drag him back ‘behind the lines’. Sounds brutal... but so is getting stuck with a sword! There he would rest, as he awaited the surgeon. The wax sealed the wound, keeping out dirt and infection, and at the same time providing a mild anaesthetic. This ‘anaesthesia’ was later discovered to be a rush of endorphins (your body’s own healing mechanism) to the damaged area. The surgeon would remove the plug of cooled wax (which had stopped the bleeding) to reveal a clean, mildly anaesthetized wound to stitch up. The soldiers seemed to recover rapidly using more wax applications as ‘band aids’ This piqued my father’s interest to the max! Could this hot wax idea combat (pun intended) ‘modern-day battle fatigue’? Arthritis and Rheumatism for instance? So, being the inventor that he was, set about manufacturing what was christened ‘the wax bath’. It was little more than a modified deep fat fryer, but the results we got from using it were nothing short of phenomenal!!
The word spread like wildfire of this ‘wonder pain controller’ so we set up a cottage industry in a disused railway station building, making 10 to 20 wax baths a day. Demand grew rapidly and new factory premises were acquired. Business was booming, orders started coming in from overseas. Looking over the books one day, we discovered something REALLY strange! We were totally stunned to learn that over 75% of our orders were being shipped to a variety of clients in... the Beauty Industry. Someone else had discovered the fantastic ‘side-effect’ of using a wax bath... soft, smooth, supple and naturally deeply cleansed skin. Although this new found knowledge didn’t stop sales sky-rocketing, my father sold the business when an American company made him ‘an offer he couldn’t refuse’ But that's not the end of THIS wax bath story... Needless to say, our (quite large) family has never been without a wax bath of one brand or another. I have introduced or recommended its use to maybe hundreds of people over the years, and have taken careful note of how the various manufacturers perform. Of the dozen or so wax bath producers around the world, there is ONE that stands head and shoulders above the rest. |
